What To Do This Summer To Get Ahead on College (Any Grade)

Every family asks some version of the same question in July: what should my child actually do this summer to be ready for college? The honest answer is that the specifics change by grade — but the underlying moves do not. Summer is the highest-leverage stretch of the year because there is no coursework competing for the hours, and small habits started now compound for years.

Whatever grade your student just finished, these four moves work.

1. Read every day

An hour a day of real reading — serious fiction and non-fiction — is the cheapest, most durable test prep that exists. It builds the vocabulary and comprehension the Digital SAT and ACT actually measure, and it does it without a single flashcard. Students who read daily from 9th grade walk into test prep two years ahead of students who cram vocab in 11th.

Start this week. Consistency beats intensity.

2. Go deep on one thing — not five

The most common mistake is collecting activities. A student in five clubs with no depth in any of them is a very ordinary applicant. What actually stands out is one narrow, student-owned project that produces something real — a piece of writing, working code, a small event, real users, funds raised, a placement in a competition.

Use the two-week test to find it: pick one skill to explore deeply, and if the student is still doing it in week three without being told, it is worth keeping. If not, drop it in September, no guilt. (For ideas by interest, our directory of competitions and programs is organized by field.)

3. Protect next year's grades

Rigour matters, but a schedule so heavy it costs an A is a bad schedule. Use part of the summer to prime the coming year academically — review the math that will carry forward, preview the hardest new course — so week one is stress-free. Grades are the foundation; nothing on this list is worth trading them for.

4. Keep an evidence log

Once a week, write one line: what you built, read, won, or shipped. It takes two minutes and it is worth more than it sounds. When application season arrives, every activity and honor is reconstructed from this log — and the rule for a strong application is simple: everything on it should be verifiable by a stranger in ninety seconds. A link, a placement, a number. If you can't point to it, it doesn't count.

The honest part

No summer plan — and no counselor — guarantees admission anywhere. At the most selective colleges, students who did everything right are still turned away every year for reasons that have nothing to do with merit. What a good plan does is remove the avoidable failures: the missed prerequisite, the competition that closed registration in October, the essay started in November. It puts a student in the strongest position they can honestly occupy. And it protects their health and curiosity along the way — because those are the point, not the by-product.

Not sure where your student should start?

The right summer looks different after 8th grade than after 11th — which is exactly why our college counselling runs as two programmes: Grades 9–10 for the full multi-year arc, and Grades 11–12 for the application years. Book a free consultation — tell us the grade and the goals, and we'll tell you honestly what's most worth doing with the weeks you have left.
